elkinweir, the former estate of Everett and Grace Rodebaugh, founding members of the Green Valleys Association, is now the headquarters and educational center for the organization.
For over forty years, the Rodebaugh's worked to transform the former declining farm into formal gardens, arboretum and sanctuary for biodiversity provided by the ponds, wetlands, meadows, and woodlands in this secluded valley.
Placed into conservation easement in 1976 and onto the National Register of Historic Places in 2001, the 197-acre site serves as the headquarters and educational center of the Green Valleys Association
Every season offers it own special delights... spring blossoms of cherries, magnolias, dogwoods and daffodils in the arboretum collections, with May the highlight of the season with many unique, one-of-a-kind rhododendrons and azaleas reaching peak bloom along the Azalea Lane. Summer showcases perennials in the Barn Ruins and pristine white water lilies reflecting in the Great Pond. Autumn is ablaze with the foliage of native swamp and sugar maples, sweet and sour gums, and franklinias mixed with a variety of Japanese maples. Winter brings the quiet of resting plants, the interest of bark and structure and the texture and colors of the dwarf evergreens in the Pinetum.
Trails, of varying lengths, traverse a variety of diverse habitats, permitting visitors to observe a range of birds and wildlife in their natural environment, or to connect to the Horse-Shoe Trail for longer hikes to nearby parks, preserves, and historic sites.
We invite you to come visit us. The grounds are open daily, with hours varying seasonally. Call 610.469.7543 for hours.
